A wedding out of town gives you the whole place, a long afternoon under the trees and a night that doesn't have to end at a set time.

We have photographed country days where the guests camped by the river, the vows were read under tall gums and the dancing went on long after dark.

Before you book a country property

Getting there A country wedding asks more of your guests. The Kevington Hotel is about two and a half hours' drive from Melbourne, Eynesbury Homestead is about 40 minutes from the CBD, and The Manor is 25 to 30 minutes up through the Adelaide Hills. Ask the venue about the road in, dirt and gravel included, and plan how everyone gets home.

Somewhere to sleep Some places sleep a crowd and some sleep nobody. Book rooms early, and tell guests well ahead if they need to find their own.

Camping If guests camp, ask about the sites, the toilets and showers, and the rules for fires, dogs and rubbish.

Fire season On a total fire ban day, declared by the CFS in South Australia or the CFA in Victoria, fires and open flames are restricted. Check before you plan sparklers, candles or a fire pit, and ask your venue about its bushfire plan.

Toilets and power On a private rural property, hire toilets for your numbers and plan power for the music, the lights and the catering.

Weather Country afternoons can be hot and the nights cold. Plan shade for the ceremony, a covered spot if it rains and something warm for after dark.

Where we shoot

Adelaide Hills
The Manor Basket Range, a country house in Summertown. A stone castle with a woodland path and a garden chapel, and a rented house with lavender and the hills on every side.
Victorian high country
Kevington Hotel. A gold-rush pub on the Goulburn River, hired whole, with rooms, caravans and camp sites for the guests.
Melbourne's west
Eynesbury Homestead. A bluestone homestead in grey box forest, with vows on the lawn under the gums and a marquee for the night.

How we photograph a bush wedding

Gum trees give beautiful shade, but on a sunny day the light under them is patchy, with bright sun breaking through the leaves here and there. We arrive early, walk the ceremony spot and find where the shade is even, so faces stay soft for the vows. At Lana and Todd's wedding the trees by the river kept the whole ceremony in deep shade on a hot, clear afternoon.

Then we wait for the late sun. When it comes in low through the trees it lifts ribbons and veils, and a few minutes is often enough. An overcast day is a gift of its own: Karina and Bronson's grey sky gave us soft, even light everywhere, so we could simply wander the lawns and the drive. A little direction when the light is right, then we step back and let the day happen.

Our bush and country weddings

Lana and Todd called off their first date because of bushfires, then brought everyone to the Kevington Hotel for take two, with tents and caravans among the trees, live tattoos at the reception and beer on ice in the bathtubs. Karina and Bronson spent a full day at Eynesbury Homestead, from the bridal room to a packed marquee, with a golf cart ride in between, and we filmed it as well.

In the Adelaide Hills, Porscha and Jordan walked a woodland path to the little chapel at The Manor on a wet winter day, and Joanna and Krish married under an old tree at a country house in Summertown, then finished in the lavender with the hills behind them.

★★★★★

Jay was an absolute professional. We loved how he set out a time line of our day and made it all so easy. Also loved the contrast of the black and white to the colour pictures. The sneak peek shortly after the day was a lovely touch. Thank you Jay and Megan.

Questions couples ask

Do you photograph weddings out of town?
Yes, in the country around Adelaide and Melbourne and further afield. Travel within 50 km of the CBD is included, and anything further is itemised in your quote.
Can our guests camp?
If the property allows it. At the Kevington Hotel there are about 15 camp sites as well as rooms and caravans, and Lana and Todd's guests all camped among the trees beside the hotel. On a private property, plan toilets, showers and the fire rules before anyone pitches a tent.
What about fire danger season?
Talk it through with your venue for any summer date, and ask about its bushfire plan. Total fire ban days are declared by the CFS in South Australia and the CFA in Victoria, and they limit fires and open flames. Lana and Todd's first date was called off because of bushfires.
Can we have sparklers, candles or a fire pit?
Check with your venue and with the CFS or CFA rules before you buy anything. On a total fire ban day open flames are restricted, and that can include a sparkler send-off or candles outdoors. At the Kevington Hotel, campers use fire pits only and never light one on a Total Fire Ban day.
Where will our guests stay?
It depends on the place. The Kevington Hotel sleeps up to 50 on site, The Manor Basket Range has 12 townhouse suites, and Eynesbury Homestead has no accommodation yet, so guests there travel home or book somewhere themselves.
What if it rains?
Choose a property with a covered space for the vows and the dinner. The Kevington Hotel has indoor and outdoor all-weather spaces, and Eynesbury's reception is in a marquee or the homestead. We photograph the day either way.
What is the light like under gum trees?
Bright and patchy on a sunny day, with sun breaking through the leaves. We find the spot where the shade is even for the vows and save the low sun through the trees for portraits late in the afternoon.
What should our guests bring?
Flat or block heels for grass and gravel, a hat for the afternoon and something warm for the night. Lana and Todd's March day was hot and clear, and by nine Lana had a faux fur coat over her lace dress.
Do we need a Notice of Intended Marriage for a country wedding?
Yes, the same as anywhere in Australia. Your celebrant lodges it, and it has to be in at least a month before the day.
Can you film it as well?
Yes. Photo and video collections start at $2,490, with one team covering both. Karina and Bronson's film from Eynesbury Homestead is on this page.
