A garden wedding puts the vows outside, under old trees and open sky, with green all around and room for everyone to stand close.

It asks for a little planning around the sun and the rain, and the photographs are worth it.

Before you book a garden

Permits Public gardens have their own rules. At Adelaide Botanic Garden, weddings are booked through Blanco Weddings, and every paid photographer needs a commercial permit, which we look after. For any other park, ask the council.

Shade Plan it for a summer afternoon. Trees help, but the sun moves, so ask where the shade will fall at your ceremony time, and think about water and somewhere to sit for older guests.

A rain plan Know your covered spot before you book: a rotunda, a covered terrace, a hall nearby or a hired marquee. Adelaide Botanic Garden has two covered rotundas. Keep a box of clear umbrellas handy whatever the forecast says.

Lawn and heels Soft lawn swallows a thin heel and wet grass is slippery, so suggest block heels or flats for anyone standing on grass, and lay an aisle runner if it's wet.

Flowers in season Ask your florist and the venue what will be out on your date.

The rules Many gardens ban confetti, petals or drones, and Adelaide Botanic Garden bans all three. No cars may drive into it either, wedding cars included, so plan to arrive on foot from a gate. Check before you buy anything.

Where we shoot

Adelaide CBD
Adelaide Botanic Garden. Nine ceremony sites, from the tall pines of Araucaria Avenue to two covered rotundas, with the Palm House for portraits.

How we photograph a garden wedding

Midday sun straight overhead is hard on faces, so we look at where the shade will fall at your ceremony time and plan the spot around it. Under trees the light is softer, and a grey day can be the kindest of all: Eli and Charlotte's ceremony under the pines of Araucaria Avenue was wet from start to finish, and the clear umbrellas kept every face in view.

Gardens also put a lot within a short walk. At Adelaide Botanic Garden we went from the pines to the columned doorway of the Museum of Economic Botany, along a path under an arch of trees and on to the Palm House, where the wet paving held their reflection. In the cooler months the sun sets early, so we plan the portraits around the last of the light.

Our garden weddings

Eli and Charlotte married in the clearing at the end of Araucaria Avenue, on a grey day that never let up. Their guests crossed the lawns under orange, black and clear umbrellas to two curved blocks of white chairs. Charlotte walked in on her father's arm, three flower girls carrying her train, and a bridesmaid opened a clear umbrella over her as she took Eli's hands. After the family photographs and the bridal party under a canopy of clear umbrellas, we walked the garden for portraits, and then everyone went across town to Woodville Town Hall for the reception. They asked for a vintage edit, with soft shadows and gentle blacks, and the grey light under the pines suited it.

★★★★★

Jay and Sofia were absolutely fantastic. They were such a wonderful part of our celebration and made us feel so comfortable throughout the day. We absolutely love our photos. We didn’t realise we were such a handsome couple until we saw them.

Questions couples ask

Do we need a permit to marry in a public garden?
Usually, yes. At Adelaide Botanic Garden, weddings are booked through Blanco Weddings, and each ceremony site is hired for two hours. For any other park, ask the council that looks after it.
Does our photographer need a permit at Adelaide Botanic Garden?
Yes. Any paid photographer working in the garden needs a commercial wedding photography permit from Blanco, engagement sessions included. We look after ours with Blanco.
Will we have the garden to ourselves?
Not in a public garden. Adelaide Botanic Garden stays open to visitors, and other weddings may be nearby. If you want the grounds to yourselves, look at a private estate with a garden and ask whether exclusive use is included.
What time of day is best for a garden ceremony?
Whenever the shade falls where you want to stand. Trees help, but the sun moves, and a photographer's guide notes that at some times of year the sun shines straight down Araucaria Avenue. We check the spot at your ceremony time and plan around it.
What if it rains?
Have a covered option and a box of clear umbrellas. Adelaide Botanic Garden has two covered rotundas, the Summerhouse and the Barber Shop, and hires out marquees and umbrellas. Eli and Charlotte married in the rain under clear umbrellas, with every face still in view.
Can guests throw confetti or petals?
It depends on the garden. Adelaide Botanic Garden allows no confetti, rice, petals or balloons, and no drones either. Ask before you buy.
What shoes work on a lawn?
Block heels or flats. Thin heels sink into soft grass, and wet grass is slippery. The paths at Adelaide Botanic Garden are mostly paved with some gravel, so tell older guests too.
When does a garden look its best?
Ask your florist what will be in season on your date, and ask the venue what is flowering. Blanco says the Rose Garden at Adelaide Botanic Garden is at its best when the roses are out. A winter garden has its own mood, with bare trees and soft grey light.
Do you travel to gardens outside the city?
Yes. Travel within 50 km of the CBD is included, and anything further is itemised in your quote.
Can you film it as well?
Yes. Photo and video collections start at $2,490, with one team covering both.
