Vows among the vines, dinner over the valley and portraits in the last of the light, photographed and filmed by a small team in the Adelaide Hills, the Macedon Ranges and on the edge of the Yarra Valley.

A winery wedding keeps the whole day on one estate, from the vows outside to dinner by a window over the vines.
We have photographed winery weddings in the Adelaide Hills, in the Macedon Ranges and at Arthurs Creek on the edge of the Yarra Valley, and each one had its own season, its own light and its own way of using the place.

Our notes from each one: where to get ready, where the ceremony happens, the portrait spots and the plan for rain.
A Valentine's Day ceremony at the Boatshed over the pond in Hahndorf, family photographs on the deck and dinner at one long table.

Vows among the vines at Arthurs Creek under a soft autumn sky, portraits by the hedges and a dance floor that stayed full.

The ceremony spot Every estate does it differently. At The Lane Vineyard in Hahndorf, larger weddings marry on the lawn above the vineyard, and the Boatshed on the dam takes ceremonies of up to about 30. Mount Macedon Winery offers its gardens, lawns and vines, with The Barn indoors. At Shaws Road Winery, couples marry on the grass among the vines.
Getting ready Mount Macedon Winery has the Garden Suite and a Homestead, with room for ten people to stay. Shaws Road has two apartments in the farmhouse. We found no accommodation at The Lane, so couples there get ready at home or in Hahndorf and arrive dressed.
Rain Mount Macedon names The Barn and the Cellar Door Restaurant as its wet weather options. The Lane and Shaws Road don't publish a plan for the ceremony, so ask the coordinator before you book.
Fire season A summer date in the Adelaide Hills can fall on a total fire ban day. Ask the venue what happens then, and check its rules on sparklers and petals before you buy any.
Getting home The wine is part of the day, so plan the ride home. Mount Macedon Winery and Shaws Road both have room for coaches.
We arrive early and walk the estate before the guests do: the shade for the family photographs, the row of vines that will catch the late sun, the spot where the light is kindest for the vows. In summer the middle of the day is bright and hard in the Hills, so we keep the shade of a deck or a pergola for the family and save the couple portraits for the last hour before dinner. At Kim and Ben's wedding the family photographs happened in the shaded corner of the Boatshed deck, and their portraits waited until the light dropped low and warm across the pond.
An estate puts a lot within a short walk. At Shaws Road, Jessica and Max's family photographs on the farm road took about a quarter of an hour, and their portraits about 35 minutes, through the vine rows, past the rounded hedges and the paddock fence and up to the lookout over the valley. A little direction when the light is right, then we step back and let the afternoon happen. Less poses, more feeling.

Kim and Ben married on Valentine's Day 2026 at The Lane Vineyard, twenty years after they got together. It was a hot, clear afternoon. Their guests sat in the shade of the Boatshed's vine-covered roof while the sun lit the pond, and dinner was at one long table in the glass-walled restaurant, with single red roses all the way along it.
Jessica and Max married at Shaws Road at the end of March, under a soft grey autumn sky that stayed even all afternoon. The vines held their green, the wind kept lifting Jessica's veil over the hedges, and the night ended with a sparkler send-off.
Kristie and Gareth married at Mount Macedon Winery in September, on a clear spring day. Jay and Sofia shot it on 35mm film, from pyjamas and champagne on the deck to a Highland cow wandering over in the paddock at golden hour, and the sky over the Black Forest Valley turned red at sunset. We cut them a short video teaser as a gift, and it is on this page.
